Nature Meets the City: The Art of Blending Public Art with Urban Spaces
Back to Archive

In collaboration with Stonnington City Council, Melbourne-based artist David “MEGGS” Hooke transformed a 70m concrete barrier along Arthur Street, South Yarra, into a striking public artwork. The mural, completed in November last year, remained hidden behind construction fencing until recently, when it was finally revealed to the public.

Featuring soothing greens, turquoise, and blues in MEGGS’ signature textural style, the artwork incorporates eucalyptus leaves and silver banksia, seamlessly blending nature with the urban landscape. More than just an aesthetic enhancement, this mural serves as an example of how public art can soften and humanise infrastructure, contributing to the liveability of a rapidly developing city.

Navigating Public Art in a Construction Zone

One of the biggest challenges of this project was executing a large-scale artwork within an active urban development site. The location meant strict adherence to safety protocols, coordination with multiple stakeholders, and careful planning to minimise disruption. Mamam facilitated:

  • Site Coordination & Logistics: Ensuring work proceeded efficiently while respecting the broader construction schedule.
  • Safety & Compliance: Obtaining the necessary permits and adhering to strict occupational health and safety (OH&S) requirements.
  • Stakeholder Management: Maintaining clear communication between council representatives, construction crews, and the artist to prevent conflicts and delays.

Transforming a Barrier into a Landmark

Concrete barriers often fade into the background of city infrastructure, but this project showcases how strategic public art can redefine a space. Mamam played a key role in curating this project, matching MEGGS' distinctive style with the council’s vision for a piece that celebrates urban nature. The artwork was installed with high-quality, durable paints suited for an outdoor, high-traffic environment.

Integrating Art with Urban Planning

This mural is a prime example of how public art can harmonise with urban development. Through this project we achieved an enhanced public space through the talents of an MEGGS while aligning with city planning goals.

The Arthur Street mural demonstrates the power of public art to transform infrastructure into something meaningful—proving that art isn’t just for gallery walls but an essential part of the urban landscape.
